CHARACTER, TRIPLETS, & TURNAROUNDS: THE MECHANICS OF COMEDIC ACTING

Unlock your comedic potential in this fast-paced, hands-on workshop! Learn how to build dynamic comedic characters, spot the hidden jokes in a script, and deliver performances that are funny, fresh, and uniquely you.

FIRST HALF: THE TOOLS OF COMEDY

We’ll cover:

  • How writers and actors see comedy differently—and why that matters for your performance.

  • Comedy starts with character—understanding archetypes, physicality, voice, and point of view.

  • What makes an audience laugh—surprise, timing, and the setup/punch structure i.e. triplets and turnarounds.

  • The golden rule: Leave your ego at the door—great comedy comes from commitment, not control.

You’ll learn how to collaborate with the script, find the jokes the writer didn’t put in, and make bold choices without “playing for laughs.”

SECOND HALF: PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE

  • Get a scene—Adam will assign short comedic scenes and scene partners.

  • Build your character—apply the techniques to prep movement, voice, and intent.

  • Rehearse & refine—work with your partner to find the comedic beats.

  • Perform, get feedback, and adjust—fine-tune your scene with Adam’s notes and perform again.

This workshop is for actors who want to sharpen their comedic instincts, make smarter choices in auditions, and stand out on screen and stage. Let’s make ‘em laugh!
